As the name implies, the thorns along the stem and the underside of leaves will leave a stinging pain to the affected area for a time .  Although despite its name this plant has long been used for medicinal purposes, as food and is an extremely valuable plant that many of our showy native butterflies rely on to lay their eggs and reproduce.
