Some great Winter natives that provide habitat and some seasonal interest with there unique qualities! Quite a few shrubs actually produce fruits that persist into winter and act as food for birds. Besides fruits though, it's a great step to leave your leaves as well, as this natural layer is important to many insect and pollinators to overwinter and gives birds more places to forage for food too!

Pictures in order
1- Nootka Rose (Rosa nutkana)
2- Pacific Crabapple (Malus fusca)
3- False Lily of the Valley (Maianthemum dilatatum)
4- Snowberry (symphoricarpos albus)
5- Red-twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea)
6- Dull Oregon Grape (Mahonia nervosa)
7- Sword Fern (Polystichum munitum)
8- Tall Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium)

Honorable mentions-
Beaked Hazelnut (Corylus cornuta)
Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)

A few days ago, a project I've been involved with for a little while was finally put into action after much planning and coordination from various people and community groups. Many students, staff and volunteers came out to put the final touches on the installation of a pollinator meadow at Vanier Centre SD43 alternate school in Coquitlam. After previously installing the wooden railings, we dug holes to plant various native species from our nursery along with a mixture of seeds to fill in all the gaps. Can't wait to see this meadow grow, establish and support life!
Hopefully even more schools and organizations will follow this example in creating more habitat.

Big thanks to the groups involved in making this project happen such as
The Burke Mountain Naturalists, Vanier Garden & Habitat Club, Rotary Club of Coquitlam, TD and big thanks to Karin Leathwood from Vanier for organizing and making this project happen!

It's about time to start planting seeds for native plants! While not all species need to be planted in Fall many of our native species require the moist, cold period naturally provided by winter in order for seeds to break dormancy and germinate in Spring.
This year we've managed to add 12 new species to our seed collection!
Check out the entire list at

Seed packs are $5 each and can be arranged for pick up or shipped to your location. Email us for orders or inquiries at info@planbeenativeplants.com

Little announcement- This coming Saturday (the 27th) will be the last week we have our public open hours from 11-3 for the rest of the season. However we will still be available by appointment as usual if anyone is interested in getting plants for late Summer/Fall plantings! Email or message us to book an appointment.

Side note- this photo is of Mountain Sneezeweed (Helenium autumnale), a great native plant for pollinators and does best in seasonally wet areas! Doesn't actually make you sneeze either. Apparently "the common name is based off the former use of the dried leaves in making snuff, inhaled to cause sneezing would supposedly rid the body of evil spirits". The more you know! 🌼🐝
